Monthly or annual road tax: compare the complete cost

A smaller payment today is not necessarily a smaller tax bill over the year. Vehicle Excise Duty payment schedules can have different total costs. This guide explains how to compare them using the annual amount you have already confirmed, rather than pretending to discover your car’s rate. Figures below were checked against GOV.UK on 6 November 2026. They are planning examples, not an individual payment instruction.

Start with a like-for-like annual amount

Use the single twelve-month rate as the common starting point. Check whether a figure in an advert is an annual payment, a six-month payment or an average monthly instalment. Those numbers describe different periods and cannot be compared directly. An apparently cheaper six-month amount may cost more when repeated across a full year.

Our worksheet asks you to enter the annual amount or deliberately choose a labelled official example. It does not use a registration number and cannot establish the right tax class, exemption or expensive-car supplement. If you do not know the annual amount, use the official service before comparing schedules.

Understand the surcharge before choosing

GOV.UK states that monthly Direct Debit and six-monthly Direct Debit have a 5% surcharge. Annual Direct Debit has no surcharge. In the current recurring-rate table for cars first registered on or after 1 April 2017, the standard single annual payment is £200. Twelve monthly Direct Debit payments total £210. A single six-month Direct Debit payment is £105.

The same table lists £110 for a single six-month payment outside that Direct Debit schedule. Two such payments would total £220 if the rate stayed unchanged. That is a full-year comparison, not a promise that next year’s tax rate will remain the same.

Read the monthly number as an average

Dividing £210 by twelve produces an average of £17.50 per month. A different annual input can create fractions of a penny when divided into instalments. Our display rounds monetary amounts to two decimal places, so an average displayed monthly amount should not be multiplied back and treated as the precise collection schedule. DVLA’s confirmation gives the actual payments.

For the current £640 recurring-rate example where the supplement applies, GOV.UK lists £672 as the total of twelve monthly Direct Debit payments. Compare that complete total with £640 paid annually, rather than comparing one instalment with the whole annual bill.

Keep cash flow separate from tax eligibility

The schedule that best fits your budget is a personal choice; this website does not recommend borrowing or assess affordability. The worksheet only shows arithmetic from an annual input. It does not check bank balances, interest, other motoring costs or whether your vehicle can use every schedule shown.

Before setting up a Direct Debit, use the official payment route and read the confirmation. Do not enter bank details into this site’s enquiry form. Save the worksheet if useful, but remember it is not evidence that tax has started or a Direct Debit exists.

  • Confirm the annual amount on GOV.UK.
  • Compare totals covering the same twelve months.
  • Check actual instalments and renewal terms with DVLA.
  • Recheck the rate before a later renewal.
